The company Stegmaier Textile Solutions produces trailer tarpaulins using CNC-controlled machines. The creation of digital drawings and the coordination with the client represents the most time-consuming steps in their process. Stegmaier commissioned us to develop a system that allows for the fully automated planning of trailer tarpaulins based on a set of input parameters. The generation of shop drawings in real-time was a top requirement of the brief. Further, the system needed to be able to output ready-to-use CNC-data. Realized as an “offline-tool” first, using Rhino, Grasshopper, and HumanUI, the system later evolved into a Shapediver-based online application. The configurator currently contains over 150 individual input parameters, resulting in over 100,000,000 possible combinations. The service was made available to other tarpaulin manufacturers for a fee at www.planenplanen.de – along with a free demo version with limited functionality.
