Pavilion for Samsung at the World Expo 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea. Project in employment at Cheil MDLab. Personal Responsibility: Concept design, parametric facade planning and visualizations.

Given the general theme “Living ocean, living coasts” our task was to design and realize a pavilion for Samsung at the World Expo 2012. A central room with video projections all around serves as a stage for hourly acrobatic performances. The visitors enter the building via a ramp, which penetrates the building shell from underneath and continues spirally over two levels inside the building, functioning as a grandstand. The facade consists of over 2000 individual aluminum panels, which gradually change their angle of inclination towards the median height, revealing the blue hull behind them. The facade elements are continued seamlessly on the roof. The design and construction of this complex project took place in under 16 months.

We developed a parametric model for the interiors, ramps, the supporting structure, and the facade, which enabled us to work iteratively and in close coordination with the client despite geometric complexity and the tight schedule. Simon Vorhammer was a part of the project team at MDLab Cheil in 2011 and 2012. His responsibility included concept design, parametric facade planning, and the creation of visualizations.
